Editing Progress

The editing process is still on-going and we have made some more progress on the sequence. So far we have focused on the beginning of the sequence and we also started to fill in the end as well.

The shots at the end of the sequence are the edited shots that we created during the first editing session and will be put into the sequence at a later. We decided to include both artistic and lip-syncing shots but have decided to focus more on lip-syncing at the moment and then adding the artistic shots. We will continue to edit until we meet our deadline for the first screening.

Editing

As we have collected all of the shots we wanted for our music video we are are ready to start the editing process. We started by editing some effects onto the shots but decided later on that we wanted to edit the sequence in a rough sequence before we add all of the effects onto the shots.

Some of the effects that we put onto the sequence include a lens flare effect over the footage to give it a dream-like effect:

This adds to the theme of our character being in purgatory (a unreal, dream-like state) that will be present throughout our video. We also played around with the three-way colour corrector as some of our shots were brighter than others. We decided to make it a faint green colour for now but this will likely be changed after we have edited the order of the video.

We will continue to edit the sequence over the few weeks to meet our deadline for our screening and we hope to start adding more effects similar to the ones above.

Forest Shoot #3

For our last shoot on location we had to make sure that we collected as many shots as we possibly could so we would have a lot of choice when the editing process begins. To show the footage in screenshot a quick 30 second powtoons has been made to show off the clips but only in screenshot form to not give to much away:

(IF THE POWTOONS IS NOT WORKING PLEASE USE THE LINK BELOW)
https://www.powtoon.com/online-presentation/elkSrJmO4uM/forest-shoot-3/#/

We hope to start the editing process within the next week so we can meet our first draft deadline. We have discussed as a group the best ways to edit the sequence will on our shoot which should make the process a lot easier.

Re-Filming With The Canon XF100

We recently decided to re-film some of the drama room scenes with a Canon XF100 camera to get some more expressive shots. We were pleased with the results as the camera quality made the shots more impressive and will bring up the overall look of our video. The image below is a screenshot taken from a piece of lip-syncing, it shows the dust particles in the air which makes the shot seem less empty and have a cool effect to it without having to edit it in:

The next image is a screenshot of a piece of footage that contained lens flare. The camera turned a typically yellow/white lens flare into a beautiful blue and green which will look great when added into the sequence. The lens flare also brings out the character a bit more or turns her into a silhouette that can be picked up by the camera which is something that we were aiming for when filming.

Overall we were all really pleased with these shots and cannot wait to film more with the camera and add these particular shots to our sequence when we start to edit.

Risk Assessment: Drama Room - Canon XF100

As we have decided to re-film certain scenes in the drama room with the Canon XF100 camera we have to write another risk assessment. We have to use the camera carefully as well as keeping all of the other risks in mind as well. This is likely our last shoot in the drama room so we had to make sure that we got all the shots we needed so we needed a more detailed risk assessment as we have more expensive equipment that we will be using for a long period of time.

Forest Shoot #2

As we have recently returned to our forest location we have filmed more shots. Many of these shots were originally planned our for our storyboard but as we had lots of time we filmed a couple of unplanned shots so we have more choice when we come to editing the sequence.

This prezi is a brief presentation on what we filmed while we were on location but there is still some missing shots which we will have to film within the next few weeks if we hope to meet our deadline in time.

Filming & Photography

Today we were able to film more shots in the forest area. While doing so, I was able to take a few photos, and I am hoping that we are able to use these shots for their Noxa's digipaks and/or website. (My personally modified versions of these photos, which are tailored to suit my suited style, is on my individual blog.)

Risk Assessment: Forest #2

As we are heading back to the forest for our second shoot on location we have written up another risk assessment to show that we have identified and now how to avoid all of the risks at our location. Similar to our other risk assessments we have assessed the level of risk and how we can work our way around these risks.

Drama Room Shoot #2

Yesterday we had our second shoot in the drama room and this time we decided to make a start on our artistic shots. We wanted to use masks to create the effect of light and dark, good and evil by having one white mask to represent innocence and purity and one black mask to represent darkness and evil. Through several different shots we displayed the transformation of Noxa turning from innocent, with the white mask, to becoming hateful and vengeful, wearing the black mask:

We will be editing a short sequence with the footage that we filmed in the drama room to see if it all works together. We have also decided that some shots will be played backwards and others in slow motion to add an extra effect to certain shots. The final edit will be posted on this blog when it is completed.

Risk Assessment: Drama Room #2

As we will be going to our drama room location tomorrow we wrote up a risk assessment to make sure we had identified all of the risks when going to this particular location with the equipment. We have written the level of risk and ways to avoid them to make our shoot a bit easier when setting up the equipment.

Forest Shoot

Today we went to the forest but unfortunately, due to Friday 13th bad luck, everything went a bit wrong. The dress sadly got dirty and it started to rain after a short while but we did manage to get a few shots. We mainly recorded on a hill and a bridge where we collected some of the shots from our storyboard. We also got two behind-the-scenes shots:

We plan to revisit our location next week to film the shots that we did not manage to film today and we will also visit our other locations to film other scenes.

Risk Assessment: Forest

As we are filming in the forest tomorrow we are required to fill in a risk assessment to show that we have acknowledged all of the potential risks when filming in the location. We have written how high the risk is and ways to avoid any injuries or damage done to the equipment:

Animatic

We have finally finished our animatic! This will give us a good outline on what we want and expect our music video to look like. Similar to our storyboard we have drawn out the shots and put them to music - a moving storyboard! - to help us when we begin editing so we have an idea on how and where to start. We have planned to make our actual music video quicker than the animatic and to film more shots than the ones that are presented in the animatic.
This is the finished product:

Making An Animatic

Today we started to edit an animatic that we started last week to help us get a clearer idea of what shots to take when start filming. We drew the shots out on post-it notes and today we started to edit them to our song choice "Narcissistic Cannibal". The final edit should be completed soon and we have a plan to travel to and film in our forest location on Friday.

First Shoot!

Today we had our first shoot! This took place in the drama room where we set up the lights and practiced lip-syncing. We also experimented with the lighting, switching between normal and blue lights, to make the simple standing, lip-syncing shot more visually interesting.

These are some images that were taken during the production. As today was our first shoot it was taken as a practice sessions to get a feel for our song and how to film our planned shots. We made two edits in total using the footage that we filmed in the drama room to see if it all worked together and to see what shots could be placed next to eachother:

Shooting Schedule

Although it isn't fully filled out yet, this is what our shooting schedule looks like so far. On the first day of shooting, we will be in the drama room, shooting scenes with more dramatic lighting.

Complete Storyboard

We have completed the first draft of our storyboard! Although some of the images are not in order of appearances we drew out all of the shots that we knew we wanted to include in our video. Some of the shots include crushing a rose - symbolising the loss of innocence - and being trapped in the forest - as a symbol for purgatory. All of these shots are linked to a sound or lyric in the song and have a location to them to help us when filming.

Letter of Copyright

Dear EarlyRise,

We would much appreciate if we could use your cover of 'Narcissistic Cannibal' for our A2 music video. We first came across your cover from a fan-made video game trailer and knew that it would be perfect for our video. As there is no current music video for your cover of the song we would love to be the first to present you with one. We have lots of ideas and themes that we would like to present through your music for this project and we hope that you will allow us to use your cover.

Many thanks,

Borie, Jasmine and Lucy - "Noxa"

Logos

Taking a break from drawing up our storyboard, we decided to use today to make logos for our artist 'Noxa'. With only a limited amount of Photoshop knowledge we set to work in making these logos:

We made the logo on the left first and although the font of the 'N', 'O' and 'A' is not final the 'X' is what we want to be focused on. The paint like effect gives it a more 'alternative rock' look yet it still has a neat look overall. The second logo involves a silhouette of a rose which is a symbol of purity and innocence, which is tainted by the black colour, and perfectly represents Noxa's image and the overall look of our video.

We also thought about using the next 'X' as a logo alone as some alternative rock band are identified through an image alone. We also discussed using the rose as our logo for the same reasons above.

Storyboarding!

Today we have started to storyboard out music video. It is quite challenging, as we are still unclear of all the shots we want to do and how we want to present them (we want to do this song justice!), but knowing us, we will get through this with the help of teamwork and determination!

Meeting Notes

Over the span of several lessons (05/10/15 - 12/10/15) the group have been holding meetings to discuss the details of our music video. This included writing down some notes whilst we talked and printing off the song lyrics to write down all of our ideas. During the first meeting we discussed names, locations and props which we would later link to lyrics:

MEETING NOTES #1

Names =

  • Infernum = Hell in Latin
  • Noxa = Harm in Latin -    Noxia = Harmful
    • NOXA
Locations =

  • Forest
  • Drama Room (Dark)
  • Carpark
  • Bridge
  • Graveyard

Props =      (Outfits)

  • Masks
  • White Dress + Black paint

  • Forest
    • Find straying paths
    • Climb trees

After we had gone through these details we planned our location check trip, which was very helpful and will definatly be useful in future planning tasks, and then in our next meeting we printed off the lyrics to our song choice, "Narcissistic Cannibal". We then annotated these lyrics with ideas that came to mind as we read the lyrics but we also placed the ideas we had formed beforehand to appropriate lyrics:

Location - Forest

Today the group went to visit our main location: the forest. Overall the location is perfect for our song choice and video. Drawing out a storyboard and writing out treatments will be a lot easier to plan out now as we have a clear location plan, this means that we can also link lyrics to locations as we have seen everything there is within the forest. We also found some areas that have sparked new ideas and places where a narrative could be introduced. To show off our location and to have something to refer back to we decided to vlog the trip. Each area shown in the vlog was all part of the same park/forest and although we might not use some of them in our final piece it was still interesting and inspiring to see all of the areas we had available to us within the same location. The first video is Jasmine's vlog and the second is Lucy's vlog.

Location Check

Tomorrow our group has decided to take the time to visit our main location, the forest. A member of our group knows a forest area that is connected to many other locations that we could use when filming our music video. We will take pictures of each location so we can refer back to them when written our treatments and drafting our storyboard. We will also, hopefully, be inspired by seeing the forest and will have a flood of new ideas when we are done.

We first thought of using a forest location after finding the following picture on Prezi.com. The picture contains all of the elements that we wanted to include in our video: darkness, emptiness and large open space.

After looking at the location in more detail we will be able to pinpoint certain ideas to a location and the storyboard will be easier to draw and plan and having a clear storyboard will help when we come around to filming.

Audience Research #1

In order to get an idea on what our audience demographic is interested in, we have created a survey with 10 questions for them to answer about music, music videos, and their personal POVs.

Song Choice

Another song choice for our music video was Narcissistic Cannibal. The original song is by Korn and Skrillex and is somewhat aggressive and wild in comparison to the version we decided to use.
The song and video are actually very violent or "badass" in a way that compliments the band's style and genre and matches it as the audience knows it. The audience has certain expectations when they see a song by a certain band or a music video and this video is acknowledged to represent these band's authentic style.

We thought that this song is way more aggressive than we wanted it to be so we found the cover by Earlyrise much more in the genre we were looking for,

The song starts smoothly and serene and gets more powerful and strong towards the end. The lyrics give us a generous amount of narrative to use within our music video and the song is composed in a controversial way that we could do a lot with the setting eg film in a forest or inside a dark place with limited lighting, so it can have a symbolical meaning to the video we create. For now this song is our final choice. We are going to print out the lyrics and annotate the ways we could create the video using the lyrics and combine the whole groups thoughts and choose the best idea as the outcome.
In our video we could combine all three elements of narrative, performance and artistic as the genre allows us to incorporate these elements.

Meeting - Coming Soon

Our group hopes that have a meeting somewhere in the near future so we can discuss possible ideas and locations. Some ideas have all ready been drafted but need to be talked about as a group before we can finalise anything. We also hope to print out the lyrics of our chosen song and annotate them with both there meaning and what shot and location would correlate with each line. This would be the first step of drafting a brief outline for our music video and will help us when we come to making a storyboard. Both the meeting notes. pictures, annotated lyrics and all of our ideas will be uploaded to this group blog and our individual blogs so we can access our notes from many different sites. After the meeting we can decide on what ideas we like the best and what should put into our storyboard for when we start filming.

Initial Ideas

For our group music video, me and two others have decided to make a music video to Korn's Narcissistic Cannibal featuring Skrillex and Kill The Noise, but check this out, because there's a twist.

Because the original song is sung by a man, we have found a cover of the song from a band called EarlyRise, who's main singer's voice is female, and we think that this would be PERFECT for our music video genre.

My group have already been coming up with ideas on what we can do within the music video, and now that we have the song choice in mind, our decisions are about to come clear.
We thought that we could contrast the music video with the song and make the protagonist of the video innocent, even though the lyrics suggest otherwise. When the melody of the song changes suddenly nearer to the end, we thought then we could subvert that and corrupt her innocence.

We also thought that maybe we could have some inter-textual references to Alice In Wonderland, possibly Little Red Riding Hood?

We were also really keen on the idea of filming in the forest, then colour correcting the footage to make it seem darker (because unless you have lights, footage doesn't come out great at night! Plus, I don't think it would be safe for a bunch of teenage girls lurking around in the woods with a camera when it's pitch black. That could turn into the Blair Witch Project all over again).
